The Community Development Department helps shape the future of Crested Butte by supporting thoughtful planning, development, and preservation of the places where we live, work, and play. We provide the community-based planning and regulatory framework that guide development in alignment with the Town’s values of being an authentic, connected, accountable, and bold community.
Long-Range Planning
Long-range planning leads the development and implementation of the Town’s Community Compass, helping guide Crested Butte’s future in a way that reflects community goals and values. Visit the Current Plans page to learn more about the compass and additional plans.
Current Planning
Current planning is where all development and building activity in Town begins. Current planning manages the review of new construction, remodels, subdivisions, demolitions, floodplain, and more — all of which must be approved by the Board of Zoning and Architectural Review (BOZAR) before a building permit can be issued. It also oversees the Town’s historic preservation program, implementing the Historic Preservation Plan. Visit the BOZAR page to learn more.
Building Safety
Building Safety ensures that all construction in Town meets safety and code standards by coordinating building permits, plan reviews, and inspections. Visit the licensing and permitting page for building permit information.
Community Housing
Community Housing manages Crested Butte’s community-serving housing programs, administers deed-restricted properties, and works with partners to support housing affordability and stability for local residents. Visit the Community Housing page to learn more.
Transportation Mobility
Transportation and Mobility conducts data analysis, guides policy development, and coordinates with other departments and stakeholders to implement the Town’s Transportation Mobility Plan. Visit the Transportation Mobility page to learn more.
Geographic Information Systems (GIS)
GIS supports the Town with spatial data, mapping, and analysis to inform planning decisions and improve public access to geographic information. View the maps repository.
