In 2022, the Crested Butte Town Council adopted The Community Compass—a visionary comprehensive plan created with and for the community. More than just a decision-making framework, the Compass is a commitment to inclusive, values-driven governance. It reflects a promise: that community voices will guide our shared future.
The Compass sets a course toward a future that is authentic, connected, accountable, and bold. But bringing this vision to life doesn’t happen on its own. Inaction is our greatest risk. As we move forward, we know there will be tradeoffs while implementing the required planning and policy work—and staying grounded in our core values will be essential.
To put the Compass into action, the Town is leading five major planning initiatives, linked below. Together, these efforts build on the foundation of the Compass and will shape updates to the Town’s Zoning and Building Codes, Design Standards and Guidelines, and lay the groundwork for new Housing and Resilient Community Strategies.

Compass Navigation
In 2024, the Town launched Compass Navigation—an integrated outreach campaign designed to bring community voices to the forefront of our planning efforts. This initiative helped align the major Compass-based plans through active and consistent engagement with the community.
The campaign included a comprehensive community survey, a series of lively neighborhood block parties, and the formation of the Compass Navigation Committee, which met quarterly to guide coordination across planning efforts.
Together, these activities ensured that the Town’s strategic plans—from transportation and climate to preservation and housing—were developed with broad input and a shared sense of direction. Compass Navigation helped transform community feedback into clear priorities, ensuring the Compass remains a living guide shaped by the people it serves.
