Crested Butte Cemetery

 

The Crested Butte Cemetery is located about ¼ mile north of the Town of Crested Butte. A reference map and a list of burial and ownership records and linked in the resources and are posted at the cemetery entrance for your convenience. 

This public cemetery is designed to maintain a natural appearance, featuring native vegetation. It is not landscaped or regularly staffed, and all administrative matters must be handled through the Clerk’s Office.

Preserving the historic character and integrity of the cemetery is a top priority for the Town. All materials and improvements should reflect the existing style and scale of the site. Due to the region’s harsh climate, plot owners are required to follow established Cemetery Guidelines and are responsible for all maintenance and landscaping within their plots.

Plot Options & Purchasing Process

The Crested Butte Cemetery offers two lot sizes for purchase:

  • Full-sized lot: 11 ft x 22 ft – $1,000
  • Quarter-sized lot: 5.5 ft x 11 ft – $300

Available plots are shown in white on the Cemetery Map. 

How to Purchase a Plot

  1. Choose a plot using the Cemetery Map.
  2. Complete the Agreement Form.
  3. Submit payment to the Clerk’s Office:
    1. Online via the Town of Crested Butte payment portal
    2. Or by check, made payable to Town of Crested Butte

Your purchase is finalized once both the completed form and payment are received.

Burial Information 

Burial Scheduling

All burials must be scheduled and performed by the Town of Crested Butte.

  • An Interment Permit must be submitted to the Clerk’s Office at least two (2) weeks before the planned burial date.
  • Burials are conducted by Town Staff only during the following hours:
    • 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM
    • 12:30 PM – 2:30 PM
  • For safety reasons, all attendees must vacate the cemetery promptly at the end of each service window (12:00 PM or 2:30 PM).

Burial Types & Plot Capacity

The Town accommodates both casket burials and cremated remains (cremains).

  • A full-sized lot can accommodate:
    • Up to four (4) caskets
    • Multiple urns, or
    • A combination of caskets and urns
  • A quarter-sized lot can accommodate:
    • One (1) casket, or
    • Multiple urns
Landscaping

Maintenance of a privately owned lot is the responsibility of the owners or family of. A Landscape/Construction permit must be filed with the Clerk’s office at least 2 weeks prior to any landscaping, memorial placement, fence instalment or other work more than weeding.
